He wore the same brown corduroy jacket every day and told friends at N.Y.U. that he lived on a diet of bread, cheese, and milk. He liked to walk to Brooklyn, where he had relatives and could buy traditional Russian brown bread. Some of his colleagues were taken aback by his fingernails, which were several inches long. “If they grow, why wouldn’t I let them grow?” he would say when someone asked why he didn’t cut them.

The center of “1 John 4:16” ranks with the most striking moments of the Mountain Goats’ entire discography, and like much of Darnielle’s best work, it marries evocative but unexplained imagery to an emotional impact that’s precise but ineffable.

Taiwan rescue teams stand by at the fire department in Taipei on January 13, 2010 as they prepare to head to Haiti to help with the rescue effort following an earthquake. Among them there are 140 people specializing in emergency and 8 dogs trained for rescue. The group was launched in 2000 after an earthquake that struck Taiwan in September 1999, and caused thousands of deaths. Haiti is one of the countries of Central America that has diplomatic relations with Taiwan. “Taiwan continues to show Haiti that in times of crisis, they are truly our friends,” says Leslie Voltaire, a special advisor to President Rene Preval.
