In “If I were a boy,” Beyonce has some line about having her boys stick up for her if she (as a he) was chasing girls and her significant other confronted her (as him) about it. A female friend the other day said that dudes don’t like to kick it with girls unless they’re getting some, and the conundrum was that she wanted male friends. The general suggestion seemed to be that dudes were better off because they could kick it and in fact prefer to kick it with other dudes while girls on a whole are just not fun to be friends with. I’m tempted by the idea that dudes are superior beings on a whole if only for the fact that masculinity is probably a superior concept to femininity and produces choicer human beings. But in the end I’m pretty sure that none of this is true. “If I were a boy” only provides ammunition for the dude side of this suggestion, though, because the female character in the song is kinda pathetic.
