Obama said he doesn’t know any serious college football fan who disagrees with him on a 8-team, 3-round college football playoff. Well, call me what you will, but I am not in favor of a playoff. One distinctive thing about college football, of course, is that the season is the playoff. I think when you implement a playoff, you put at risk the thing about college football that makes its regular season far more exciting than NFL and college basketball, which is that every game is critical if you want a shot at the national championship. Who said sport is about figuring out who’s best anyway? College football has a sort of artistic component, not unlike figure skating, which makes it maddening and worthwhile.
