If you enjoy watching basketball juuuust a little bit, it's still worth reading Simmons' fantasy advice column.
I have mixed feelings about Bill Simmons too. I often enoy reading his columns, but if all it takes to be a “good writer” is to pack your columns with unrelated pop-culture references, then anyone can be a good writer.
This is a terrible column. He doesn’t talk about whether his rankings are based on head-to-head or roto! They’re two different fantasy basketball games. He doesn’t talk about the categories he plays with! Uh, that’s the whole game. Do you play with turnovers? His comments on Chris Paul are nonsensical (what in god’s name can you ask for above and beyond 21-12, 3 steals, and great percentages? that’s five good-to-great categories right there, and he hurts you nowhere), and including Dwight Howard at #5 loses all credibility. Simmons talks about LeBron’s 30-7-7 statline, but points and rebounds are probably the two most overrated categories, and LeBron will hurt you in FT%. Paul hurts you nowhere, and the rest of his numbers are ungodly.
